Mantras
Mantra – words, phrases or syllables which are chanted thoughtfully and with growing attention said out loud or mentally without the need to achieve anything.
Benefits – they work on the vibrational effect of the sound, restoring the pattern of sound in each and every cell – working towards a healthy mind and body. They have a positive effect on the energy that is behind the word by repeating the same word over and over, not just on physical level but on subtle body emotions, intellect and soul.
Reasons for mantra - Repetition is a powerful way of keeping us in the present and stopping our mind jumping from one thought to another - when mind wanders off - use mantra to bring attention back.
The time we are ‘intensely’ in the present gives us the opportunity to not hold onto ‘any baggage’, subconscious past experiences or thoughts for the future – we can just ‘be’ in that moment, and by being there can lead to experience great peace, profound silence and supreme joy.
Om – OM is the most often chanted sound among all the sacred sounds on earth. This sound is considered as the sound of the existence. It is believed that the whole universe, in its fundamental form, is made up of vibrating, pulsating energy. Om is considered as the humming sound of this cosmic energy. Said in three stages A U M. Aaahhh at the back of the throat, Umm at the roof of the mouth and Mmm at the front of the mouth.
· Inhale deeply, make the sound aaahhh with mouth open as you start to exhale
· change the sound to umm, slightly closing the mouth still with the same exhale and finally close the mouth and
· change the sound, without stopping to the mmm vibration.
Focus on the sound, the vibration and lengthening the exhalation. Take a deep inhalation and repeat. The chanting of Om can be done as many times as you like and can be done silently or out loud. When you have finished, stay with the space you have created and observe how the body and mind are feeling.
Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti
Shanti – meaning peace. Said at the end of a class, with the hands in prayer mudra. Holding the hands in front of the forehead, saying Shanti (peace in my head), bringing hands to heart centre, saying Shanti (peace in my heart), bringing hands to the floor, saying Shanti (peace on earth).
